New free resources from Twinkl in partnership with the Tate gallery

Twinkl have produced some new, free, resources in partnership with Tate Kids, aimed at introducing children to some famous artists, helping them to learn more about them and inspiring their own creativity. Art is very important to me, and I love sharing my thoughts and feelings about different paintings with my children, so I was looking forward to seeing what my children thought of these resources.

You can find all the new resources here - Tate Kids and Twinkl. Three artists are featured - Gwen John, John Millais and George Stubbs - and resources have been produced for children in both Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2. The resources are intended to introduce children to the artist, encourage them to do their own research into their lives and features of their work, then have a go at producing their own work based upon the style of the artist. All these resources are completely free, so you don't need a paid subscription to download them.

I decided to look at the work of Gwen John, as she was a new artist to me. We started by downloading the PowerPoint presentation All About Gwen John PowerPoint KS2. The presentation is a really good introduction to the artist,  with biographical information, many examples of her paintings, and discussion about her painting style. There is also a Powerpoint presentation aimed at KS1 children which is a little simpler - All About Gwen John PowerPoint KS1. I was really interested to learn about her, and how she managed to succeed as an artist in a male-dominated world, it's a really inspiring story.

Download here - Gwen John PowerPoint KS2

Then I downloaded the Gwen John Artist Research Discovery Pack KS2. The pack contains a number of resources - a Comparison Sheet to compare her work to that of another artist, a Fact File containing some key facts, a KWL Grid to complete things that the child knows, wants to know and has learnt, a My Powerful Questions sheet to help focus their research, and a Research Map to to add in and display facts and pictures. I chose the KS2 pack for my older child, but like the PowerPoint presentation this resource is also available in a slightly simplified version aimed at KS1 children -  Gwen John Artist Research Discovery Pack KS1

The children really enjoyed learning about a new artist, and next time we are in London I'm planning a trip to the gallery to see some of her paintings in real life!

I have been provided with a Platinum subscription to Twinkl in exchange for sharing these resources on my blog and social media.

Christmas gifts that children can make with Twinkl

I love encouraging the children to make homemade gifts for friends and family, and today I'm sharing some fab resources from Twinkl to help your children do just that. There's a huge range of printables that can be customised by children to make a gift by themselves, as well as instruction sheets that children can use to put together the perfect gift.

These resources are all available as part of a Twinkl subscription - visit the Twinkl website to find out more and to see the latest subscription packages.

For parents

I love this Christmas Voucher Gift Book. It contains individual vouchers which can be printed and stapled together to form a book of coupons which parents can exchange for various things like a foot massage, a hug or an hour of uninterrupted 'you time'. You can also print customised vouchers with your own ideas, I'd love to see what my children came up with as treats for me!

I would also like to receive this Christmas Cookie Mix in a Jar which contains the dry ingredients for making a batch of cookies along with a printable recipe card with full instructions. With a bit of help children can practice their measuring skills by filling the jars, and then the jar can be decorated using stickers or chalk pens and tied with ribbon.

For Grandparents

These Woven Paper Hearts take a bit of practice to make, but once you have the knack they don't take long at all and you can experiment with your own designs and colour combinations. Start by printing the simple template to practice, then use it to cut out your own coloured or patterned paper. Once assembled the hearts can either be used to hold sweets, or hung up as reusable decorations for the Christmas tree. Making smaller ones is a great way to use up colourful scraps of paper, or you could reuse old wrapping paper or coloured envelopes from Christmas cards.

Woven paper hearts using a template from Twinkl

These simple Christmas Candle Holders make a lovely gift and could be personalised with the name of the child and the year. As an extra gift you could buy a pack of seasonally scented tea lights to go inside.

And another jam jar craft - these Christmas Plants in Jars are very sweet and should be easy to look after indoors.

For siblings

Slightly older children might enjoy sewing and decorating some Felt Stocking Christmas Craft which can be filled with sweets or a small toy. They can be personalised with the recipients name, and are reusable too.

These Santa Gift Box Christmas Decoration can be printed in full colour and just need to be assembled with a little bit of parental help. They would make a lovely gift filled with sweets, and are a lovely Christmas decoration too. You can also print penguin and gingerbread man themed boxes.

For a friend

The slime craze shows no sign of dwindling, and I think most children would be delighted with a batch of Chocolate Slime. In fact the giver will probably have just as much fun making up the slime for a friend, using just a few basic ingredients.

Another lovely gift for a friend is a Christmas Basket which you can print out, colour in and fill with sweets.

For a teacher

Teachers definitely deserve a gift at Christmas, and Twinkl has plenty of ideas. I love this Flower Pot Teacher Gift with a label that you can print to thank your teacher for all their hard work.

Or else you could help children put together a simple Teacher Relaxation Kit which comes with a list of ideas for things to include, and a label that you can print to remind your teacher to relax over the school holiday.

Finally, a lovely way to present any gift is with some Christmas Gift Tags that can be coloured in and personalised.

Twinkl also have lots of great Christmas decorations that you can print. I shared some last year in this post - Decorating your home for Christmas with Twinkl.

I have been provided with a Twinkl Platinum membership in exchange for sharing the resources on my blog and social media.

Crafting for Diwali with Twinkl Resources

In 2018, Diwali will be celebrated on the 7th November. I always like to remind my children of the Diwali story as the time approaches, and we celebrate with family as well as doing some themed crafts and activities. Today I'm sharing some Diwali themed printables from Twinkl Resources that you can use at home with your children to help them learn about the Diwali story and to decorate your home.

When it comes to telling the Diwali story, a great place to start is the Diwali Story PowerPoint (Premium resource). The Diwali story is told in simple language with engaging illustrations, and finishes by explaining briefly why Diwali is celebrated today. You can bring the story to life with these Diwali Story Puppets (Premium resource) or put together this Diwali Paper Toy Character Set (Premium resource) to make some fun Diwali toys. They make great decorations too! If you are looking for a free resource, you could make your own puppets using these Diwali Colouring Sheets.

Decorating for Diwali is lots of fun, and Twinkl have plenty of resources to help. I like to decorate the mantelpiece in our living room for special occasions, so I started with some Diwali Bunting (Premium resource). The bunting is bright and colourful, featuring characters from the story and Diwali symbols like lanterns and diwa lamps.

At each end I added a Simple 3D Diwali Decoration (Premium resource) that you can either print already coloured, or in black and white so that it can be coloured yourself.

There are plenty more of decorations to print, including these Diwali Themed Paper Chains (Premium resource) as well as lots of craft ideas in this Diwali Craft Activity Pack (Premium resource) which would make great decorations.

When it comes to making Diwali cards, Twinkl also has plenty of different options. If you are looking for a free resource, I really like these Diwali Card Templates which are lovely and bright. You could also use the free Diwali Colouring Sheets that I mentioned above, perhaps by printing to different sizes, colouring them in, and using them to decorate blank cards.

There are also some lovely Happy Diwali Card Templates (Premium resource) that children can colour themselves, and my favourite cards are the Diwali Pop Up Cards (Premium resource), we'll definitely be sending some of these this year!

As you can see, Twinkl have plenty of Diwali themed crafts to keep you and your little ones entertained and to bring some colour into your home!

Enjoying the World Cup with Twinkl Resources

The World Cup starts next week, and it will definitely be dominating our household television for the next few weeks! I really like to help the children get into the spirit of big sporting events, whether that's by decorating the house, doing some crafting, or enjoying other related activities. Today I'm sharing some of the resources that Twinkl have produced to help get children involved in the World Cup celebrations.

If you don't have a Twinkl subscription, in the second half of this post you can find links to some fab free resources that just require a free Twinkl account to download!

I started our World Cup planning by printing a World Cup Wall Chart. This lovely colourful poster has spaces to write in the scores and then follow the teams through to the finals. I've stuck it on the door to the living room so we can keep it updated as we watch the games!

Twinkl Resources World Cup poster to print

If you want to up your World Cup decoration game, Twinkl have lots of different options. You can print some cheerful World Cup Bunting (subscriber resource) or even download a World Cup Display Pack  (subscriber resource) which includes lettering, banner, posters, bunting and more - fantastic for decorating a classroom or role play area and perfect if you are hosting a World Cup themed party.

I've also printed some World Cup Countries Cards (subscriber resource) which are a great way to learn about the flags of the different countries taking part.

When it comes to football and World Cup related activities, Twinkl have plenty to choose from. Harry really loves the longer mystery games that Twinkl has produced with a variety of different themes. In the Football Maths Mystery Game (subscriber resource) which is aimed at KS2 children you need to work out who has sabotaged a team's football kits by narrowing down a long list of suspects using maths activities. There are lots of different clues to solve based around telling the time, working out the perimeter of shapes and more and it will keep him busy and entertained for ages.

He also loves a crossword, so I've printed him the World Cup Crossword (subscriber resource) which will also teach him a few facts about football and the tournament.

For Mia I've printed some Football Colour by Number sheets (subscriber resource) which she loves, and she also enjoys a word search so I found the World Cup Word Search (subscriber resource) which has three different levels so you can choose the most appropriate one for your child. These activities would all be great for the classroom to keep on hand when you need something to fill a few minutes.

World Cup printables from Twinkl resources

If you don't have a paid subscription, Twinkl also offer a number of great free printable resources, and you just need to create a free account to access them.

Here are some of my favourite free football themed resources:

Football World Cup bookmarks - These football themed bookmarks make a great gift - they'd be perfect for party bags if you are hosting a football themed party or event for children.

Design a Football - This would be a fun activity for children to work on while watching the football.

Football World Cup Players Colouring Pages - Another great activity to keep children entertained while the football is on and great to keep on hand for a football themed event.

Football Word Mat - I love the Twinkl word mats, they are great for introducing new themed vocabulary to children and helping them to spell the more tricky words.

Football Page Borders - A lovely way to display your child's football themed writing or artwork.

I hope that you have lots of fun watching the World Cup with your children!

Twinkl Green Week 2018

From the 5th to 11th March 2018, Twinkl will be holding Twinkl Green Week, an event aimed at supporting educators and children to think about environmental issues, and how they can take positive steps to lessen their carbon footprint and be more green.

Twinkl have provided a wide range of resources for subscribers which aim to teach children about a range of important enviromental issues, including plastic, recycling, reusing, reducing and endangered animals. Many of these resources are themed to tie in with the new eBook The Messy Magpie which can be found here - The Messy Magpie eBook (Twinkl subscriber resource). The book introduces us to Morris the Magpie as he discovers the damage that his habit of collecting rubbish has caused to his forest, and follows along with him as he learns about recycling.

My children both loved reading the book and I printed them out some of the related activities. When it comes to printing, Twinkl provide ink saving alternatives which save both ink and money and I always choose these as there is only a slight difference in quality which makes no difference to us. Also, many of the resources are provided as digital Powerpoint presentations which require no printing at all for classroom use.

Twinkl The Messy Magpie board game

While the story was still fresh in our minds we started with the Messy Magpie Board Game (Twinkl subscriber resource). It's a simple game to play, you just need to work your way around the board to the recycling centre. But on the way you need to answer some questions about the story, a great way to test reading comprehension and make the game more competitive!

Harry has been learning about grid references at school, so I was pleased to find these Messy Magpie Grid References Activity Sheets (Twinkl subscriber resource). Children need to go to each grid reference and colour in the square accordingly. Harry's not normally one for colouring, but he loved the challenge of working out what colour he needed to use.

Twinkl Green Week resources

Mia on the other hand loves colouring, so I printed her some colour by number sheets based on simple sums which were just the right level for her. We started with the Addition Facts up to 20 Maths Mosaic Activity Sheet (Twinkl subscriber resource) and she was delighted to watch the picture take shape.

Twinkl educational resources for Green Week

We also have the Subtraction Facts up to 20 Maths Mosaic Activity Sheet (Twinkl subscriber resource) ready for another day, and she requested the Messy Magpie Word Search (Twinkl subscriber resource) which contains lots of related words, great to keep little ones occupied for a few minutes.

Twinkl resources for teaching about the environment

There are so many resources that there is sure to be something to suit your child's current interest or support a topic that they are learning about at school. For example, Harry has shown quite an interest in recycling recently, so he was really interested in this Recycling Symbol Detectives Activity Sheet (Twinkl subscriber resource) which can be used to identify products around the house that are suitable for recycling.

You can find all the resources here - Twinkl Green Awareness Week, and although these resources require a subscription to download there will also be some free resources released through the week.

Christmas printable decorations from Twinkl

If you need some fun and simple ways to decorate your home this Christmas, Twinkl Resources have a huge range of full colour printables which you can print and assemble for some easy Christmas crafting. Today I'm sharing a few of my favourites! Please note that these printables are all Platinum resources which means that you need a paid subscription to download them. This Simple 3D Christmas Lights Decoration (Twinkl subscriber resource) allows you to make some Christmas lights in three festive colours which can be strung together and used as bunting. Here you can see it across our fireplace, and it would also look great hung down the banisters or across the top of the room.

It was super easy to put together and looks really effective!

In the middle I have hung a 3D Christmas Wreath Display Printable (Twinkl subscriber resource). Once again, this printable was really easy to assemble and makes a great little Christmas decoration.

The children had a lot of fun making and playing with these 3D Christmas Fortune Tellers (Twinkl subscriber resource). They don't have any complicated cutting or folding, so even little ones can put them together once they've been shown how to, and they are great for Christmas role play or just to use as a decoration.

Finally I had a go at some Christmas Origami Paper Crafts (Twinkl subscriber resource). There are lots of different designs to choose from, and they vary in complexity, so you can choose the design most suitable for the children or adults that you are working with. The finished pieces are very sweet and look lovely on display. You could also punch holes in the top and use them to decorate the tree, or embellish them further with glitter and sequins.

Ancient Egyptian Day

After the success of Minecraft Day, it was time for our second themed day of the summer holidays - Ancient Egyptian Day. This was Harry's choice, inspired by having studied Ancient Egypt at school last term, and he had some ideas of his own. In fact I found so much to do that Ancient Egyptian Day actually spilled over into the weekend and inspired our activities for several days!

How to hold an Ancient Egypt themed day with children

As usual, I set up our dining table with some of our favourite Ancient Egypt books and my little cat statue that my parents brought me back from Egypt after I regretted not buying one after our own trip. The night before I printed out a set of Ancient Egypt Matching Flash Cards (Twinkl subscriber resource). This is a set of cards which make up text and image pairs. I stuck them up all around the house. The children loved spotting them when they came down to breakfast, and when they had finished we played a mad matching game which involved them tearing about the house trying to match up the cards - they loved it!

Twinkl resources for Egyptian theme

They were ready for some quiet activities after that, so I settled them down with an Ancient Egypt Wordsearch (Twinkl subscriber resource) and a Design an Ancient Egyptian Death Mask printable (Twinkl subscriber resource). Mia in particular really loved this activity, she spent ages making sure that her mask was symmetrical.

While she was getting on with it Harry spent time reading his Explore 360: The Tomb of Tutankhamun (affiliate link) book which we received to review a little while ago. Unfortunately the free app is no longer available.

Design your own death mask craft

Then we moved onto our baking activity and made some gingerbread mummy biscuits. I used a reduced version of my own recipe which makes about 12 mummy biscuits. When the biscuits had cooled we used a spoon to drip white icing over the biscuits to form stripes like bandages - they looked brilliant and were delicious!

Gingerbread mummy biscuits

Our next craft was another mummy one - making our own mummy models. This idea came from a great book that Harry received for his birthday - Egyptian Things to Make and Do (affiliate link). The book is packed with crafts to do with Ancient Egypt which all use materials that are readily available and are really imaginative. The mummies were made using tin foil pieces, scrunched up and placed together to form the shape of a person and a cat, then covered with more in foil to hold everything together firmly. Then the children used thin strips of kitchen roll, dipped in water and wrapped around like bandages.

Making mummies craft with children

When they were dry I painted them with a slightly diluted mixture of PVA glue to keep everything stuck down firmly. They really enjoyed making their mummies and it was interesting to see how the bandages had to be positioned to wrap the bodies most efficiently.

Ancient Egypt day making mummies

All this mummification reminded Harry of something that he'd done at school - mummifying a tomato. I found some simple instructions online and we gave it a go. You basically just scoop out the inside of the tomato, give it a wash, pack it with salt to preserve it, then leave it somewhere warm and dark. Ours is currently sitting in the airing cupboard, I'll be checking in a few days to see what has happened to it!

How to mummify a tomato

After lunch we had a go at playing the Ancient Egyptian game of Senet, using another printable from Twinkl - Ancient Egyptian Board Game Senet (Twinkl subscriber resource). The game involves throwing sticks to determine how many spaces to move your counters, and racing to move all your counters off the board, with lots of extra goes, swapping, and safe spaces. It was a bit complicated to start with but we worked it out and it was a lot of fun to play!

Ancient Egyptian game Senet printable

It was time for more crafting, and we decided to attempt some headbands. Harry found one in a book that he wanted to try but it was a bit complicated, so we used this Egyptian Snake Head Band printable (Twinkl subscriber resource). It was simple to put together and looks really good! There are also some other fab papercrafting printables over at Twinkl, you can make a Mummy, a Pyramid and a Sphinx (Twinkl subscriber resources).

Printable 3D Egyptian headband from Twinkl

Then Harry pulled out a hieroglyph chart and ruler that he bought on a trip to the British Museum. The ruler has a stencil for drawing the different hieroglyphs, and he loves writing little messages.

While he was doing that I began to work on some cases for their mummies, again using instructions from the Egyptian Things to Make and Do (affiliate link) book. You make a basic shape for the case using a shaped piece of cardboard and a cardboard strip taped up the sides. I gave the case several coats of white paint to cover up the printing, then left overnight to dry.

The next day we covered the cardboard cases with papier mache made from white tissue paper and glue. This made sure that the edges were covered evenly and the whole thing had a smooth finish. Then we painted them with a gold coloured acrylic paint. When it was all dry the children decorated them using stickers from the craft book and their own designs, with a hieroglyphic alphabet for some writing. I think they look pretty good!

Finally, we had to involve Minecraft in our themed day somehow. Harry set them both up in a desert landscape, and I challenged them to build a pyramid.

Easter bunting using free Twinkl printable resources

Easter bunting using free resources from Twinkl

Regular readers will know that I'm a huge fan of Twinkl resources, especially when it comes to themed resources for different special occasions throughout the year. This week we've been making some simple Easter bunting using a free printable resource - Easter Card Templates (free download). This resource contains a variety of different Easter and Spring themed pictures to colour, which can be used in all sorts of Easter crafting.

Easter bunting using free resources from Twinkl

To make our bunting, once Mia had coloured in the pictures I cut them out and glued them to circles of pastel coloured cardboard. I punched a hole in the top of each one and strung them together with some purple yarn. I used a small piece of tape to make sure that all the pictures were facing the right way, and hung them up above our fireplace for a cheery, colourful decoration.

Easter bunting using free resources from Twinkl

Mia loves colouring and the bunting was so easy to make! It would be a great activity for a classroom or group of children, and you could also use the colouring pictures to make Easter cards, collage pictures, or other types of decoration.

Easter bunting using free resources from Twinkl

Twinkl have many many more resources for Easter which are fantastic either as standalone crafts and activities or basic worksheets that can be used for your own crafting. Some are available to subscribers only but the Twinkl website also has a large selection of printables which are free to download, you just need to register. Below are a couple more fantastic Easter resources which would be great for keeping the children entertained in the run up to Easter.

Easter Colouring Posters (free download) - large colouring sheets great for very little ones that could be mounted on coloured card and used as decorations, or printed at a smaller size to be coloured and used for Easter cards.

Easter Egg Page Borders (free download) - brightly coloured Easter Eggs decorate the borders of these pages which are great as a frame for your child's drawing or writing.

Free Valentine's Day printables from Twinkl Resources

With Valentine's Day approaching, I thought that I'd share some fab printables and activities from Twinkl. Twink have a huge range of Valentine's Day resources, and for a small subscription fee you can have access to many many more across a wide range of subjects. But today I'm featuring my favourite free Valentine's Day resources from Twinkl.

Free printables for Valentine's Day from Twinkl

The Valentine's Day Word Mat (free download) is a great way to help children with tricky words when they are doing creative writing. I love printing out the Twinkl word mats on all sorts of subjects, especially the seasonal ones, and sticking them up around the house for the children to glance at as they are passing, a great way for them to pick up some new vocabulary.

I love these Patterned Hearts Colouring Sheets (free download), which are great for using in Valentine's Day crafting. I printed out one set at full size and one set at 50% to make the smaller hearts, then Mia coloured them in and we used them to make a colourful hanging heart decoration for the window.

Free printables for Valentine's Day from Twinkl

Mia also used one of the large hearts to colour and use as the front on a Valentine's Day card for her friend, decorated with plenty of glitter.

These Valentine's Day Colouring Pages (free download) are also great to print out and use in your crafting, again you could print them out in different sizes and use them to stick on to Valentine's Day cards, onto cardboard triangles to make bunting, or to make posters.

Another printable that can be used as a craft for a loved one is these Valentine's Day Card Colouring Templates (free download) which can be coloured in and decorated to make some lovely cards. These would be fantastic to keep a group of children busy and to make some lovely keepsakes.

Printable Christmas decorations with Twinkl Resources

Regular readers of the blog will know how much I love Twinkl. I'm always printing out resources for the children, whether it's on topics that they are studying at school or things that they've shown an interest in. With Christmas approaching, Twinkl have a huge range of Christmas themed crafts and accessories, and with children that love colouring and crafting I thought we'd use some of the printables to create our own unique Christmas decorations.

Printable Christmas decorations with Twinkl resources

Twinkl have a fantastic Mindfulness Colouring Christmas Decorations pack (Twinkl subscriber resource) which contains a lovely selection of printable Christmas decorations for children to colour, with some really pretty intricate designs that will keep them busy for ages. They are also great for adults to colour as well as they are so detailed, really lovely for the whole family to colour together. The pack contains baubles, paper chains, stars and angels.

The baubles in this pack were my favourite, you can use whatever cheerful colours you like and then cut and assemble them to hang on the tree. They are a bit fiddly so it's best if an adult can put them together and it's best to use a glue stick style glue so that it sticks down instantly. We used shiny silver ribbon to make hanging loops and then glued sequins all over them for a bit of bling, I think they look fab, they would be great in a school or childcare setting where each child could make their own bauble for the tree!

Twinkl Christmas decorations to print and colour

If you want something a bit quicker, you can also download and print a pre-coloured version of the same baubles here - Christmas Paper Baubles Decoration (Twinkl subscriber resource) - which just need to be cut out and glued together, again you could bling them up a little with sequins or stickers.

Twinkl Christmas decorations to print and colour

Some printable baubles that are a bit easier for little ones to put together themselves are these Simple 3D Paper Christmas Baubles (free download). You can print either a completely blank template for children to come up with their own designs, a black and white one to colour, or a colour version that just needs to be assembled. Here are the pre-coloured ones, they are really easy to put together.

Twinkl Christmas decorations to print and colour

Then here are some of the ones that we coloured in ourselves. We used felt pens to colour some of the baubles as well as these gorgeous Metallic Ink Gel Pens from Uniball which add a lovely shiny texture to the colouring and are great for highlighting some of the details.

Twinkl Christmas decorations to print and colour

We use the metallic gel pens again for these paper chains, also printed from the Mindfulness Colouring pack above. I have very fond memories of making paper chains to hang up around the house when I was little and I love that you can involve your children to make some really unique decorations.

Although these decorations are mainly made using subscriber resources, Twinkl also offers a great selection of free resources which you can adapt for your Christmas crafting. For example, I printed out some of the pages from this Colour in Christmas Cards (free download) resource and cut out some of the Christmas images. The children coloured them in, then I cut them out and we stuck them to some circles of gold cardboard and added ribbon to hang from the tree. As you can see it has been a while since Mia last saw a snowman - she's coloured him blue!

Homemade Christmas decorations with Twinkl resources

Twinkl have such a huge range of Christmas printables it's well worth having a browse. If you are looking for some more free resources, you might like this Cutting Skills Christmas Tree Activity (free download), which would make a lovely decoration on the wall once it's coloured in. You can also make your own Advent Calendar with this Design an Advent Calendar Activity (free download) and either draw some Christmas pictures or cut out pictures of friends and family or from festive magazines to go behind the windows.
